Research Paper
Try to imagine that two polar bears stand on thin ice; there is nothing surrounding them but sea. They look exhausted and hopeless. Actually, it truly happened in the Arctic. This year, the Daily Mail took a dramatic photo and showed what the plight polar bears face (Mouland, 2007). Furthermore, scientists predicted that the Arctic would lose its ice cover in summer by 2030 (Artic sea ice cover at record low, 2007). All these pointed out that humans should take actions for polar bears immediately.
Polar bear is the biggest carnivore, which can be 10 feet tall and 1700 ponds (Mouland, 2007), in the Arctic, and survives by hunting seals. They are also may be used as a standard to monitor the ecosystem of the Arctic by measuring their hair, body fat and weight. Basically, polar bears rely on the floating ice to move to faraway places for hunting in summer. Although polar bear are adjusted to the water and can be swimming a long distance easily, the impact of ice declining has really crashed their lifestyle. In other words, polar bears need to swim longer than before, and that can deplete their energy and make them exposed to danger indirectly. As a result, the melting of sea ice has forced polar bears to become endangered.
Recently, the increased emission of greenhouse gases has accelerated global warming and caused the shrinking of ice caps. Scientists have predicted that the Arctic could have no ice in summer by 2040 (Polar bears on thin ice, 2007). In addition, In Broder’s (2007) article “Warming is seen as wiping out most polar bears” the US government scientists reported that two-thirds of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050. One of the reasons is that their habitats are disappearing; another is illegal hunting, which is been considered the biggest cause to lead to their extinction (Langan, 2007). Moreover, taking polar bears away could cause a disaster in the Arctic. It could increase the amount of seals and make the marine ecosystem face destruction. In brief, polar bears cannot protect themselves, but humans can protect them. As a result, people should save polar bears from extinction.
First, people should slow down the melting of sea ice by decreasing the production of greenhouse gases. The increasing of carbon dioxide, which is one kind of greenhouse gas, is related to temperature rising. Humans should try to find or create a renewable energy to replace unrenewable energies, such as oil and coal, which produce a mass of carbon dioxide when burning. Today, solar energy is being considered as a perfect new energy. Scientists have tried to use solar energy to heat houses or water and have had great successes. There are obvious progresses in solar energy products. For example, the hi-tech vehicle, which is running by sunshine, may enter our daily life after 30 to 50 years. In addition, the carbon dioxide production has been rising more than two percent annually (Polar bears on thin ice, 2007). People should cut the emission of carbon dioxide by installing energy-efficient appliances or saving energy, such as taking public transportation or cutting off the power supply of offices at night.
Second, for the long term, illegal hunting is the biggest factor to threaten the polar bear population. Some people, like Inuit and Nunavut, have the tradition of hunting polar bears, and they believe that the activity should be maintained. For an Inuit hunter, it is not only a preservation of tradition but also a way to create income (Krauss, 2007). There were more than 40 polar bears that had been killed by hunters annually. Now those polar bears are endangered, many people are claiming that why the tradition should be continued. As a result, many countries, such as Canada and Norway, have made laws to ban illegal hunting. These laws have contributed to protecting the polar bear. In fact, In Canada's eastern Arctic, one of 19 polar bear populations grew to 2,100, up from 850 in the mid-1980s (Langan, 2007). Considering all of the above, people should push all countries to make laws to ban illegal hunting. Humans should seek a balance between cultural and environmental issues.
Third, helping polar bears to migrate to more northern areas from their current habitat is another solution. Although the Arctic has lost its ice cover gradually, the north part of the Arctic still abounds with ice. Recently, the evidence has showed that polar bears have been moving toward the north part (Langan, 2007). In other words, polar bears have the ability to adapt to a new environment. People can use advanced technological instruments to help polar bears transplant. Even now, scientists do not have any project about moving polar bear to the Antarctica. In “Job swap” Pond claimed, “polar bears would probably survive in the Antarctic, and the Southern Ocean around it, but they could devastate the native wildlife” (Par. 3). That means that polar bears can live in other icy environments, but could damage the original species, such as penguins. However, it may be a solution to move the polar bear into an icy island in the Antarctic, and try to isolate them from penguins.
Finally, ecotourism is another way to advocate globalism and inspire people to think about how the ecological balance and biodiversity should be valued. In simpler terms, ecotourism combines the natural resource with tours for humans and focuses on environmental protection and learning a new way to live on the planet. It is based on the rule that minimizes the impact on the environment. Moreover, it can give the environmental protection organization financial support that can help them program more efficient projects for keeping the ecosystem balanced. For example, governments can help Inuit and Nunavut people to develop the ecotourism business. It not only can add income for them, but also can intensify the idea to save polar bears.
Some people claimed we should spend money to help alleviate poverty and get a better life quality instead of saving polar bears. On the one hand, a study has showed that some species could adapt to the mild climate change (Bhattacharya, 2004). That is one of the reasons that why the population of polar bears is climbing today in some coastal spots. However, scientists predicted that the Arctic would become an ice free world in summer by 2030 (Arctic sea ice cover at record low, 2007). It is impossible for polar bears to survive in ice-free surroundings. On the other hand, some people claimed that the amount of polar bears is increasing. Nevertheless, according to Langan (2007), “the increase in the population is not a climate-change related issue. It’s the result of conservation and an increase in the harp seal population”. As a result, undoubtedly, polar bear will become extinct in several decades.
In conclusion, global warming is linked to human activities directly. People have the responsibility to take the consequences and to solve the problem. The climate change is not only threatening polar bears but all species. People should try to reduce the greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide in order to cool the Earth and to reserve the ice of the Arctic. Moreover, international countries should promote laws to ban illegal hunting to keep the amount of polar bears. Transplanting is another option that would help the polar bear to move to a suitable environment. In addition, people can work in ecotourism, which can benefit for endangered species and their habitats. However, the melting of the Arctic is progressing. We should not just watch the problem become worse and do nothing. People should take some actions that would save polar bears from extinction immediately.

Wal-Mart
Synthesis Exercise
An economic system is a method that tries to make people satisfy their needs. There are many businesses that follow the rules and work well in America; the successful one is Wal-Mart. In fact, all particulars of Wal-Mart, convenience and cheapness, are beneficial for all Americans. In 2005, Wal-Mart is planning to build a new supercenter in the Carbondale-Murphysboro area. The action is good for all the residents in these locations. Moreover, it also creates numerous job opportunities for these areas.
First of all, one of the advantages of Wal-Mart is convenience. From clothes to cosmetics, from gloves to golf balls, people always can find everything they need in Wal-Mart, because of the multi-choice of goods. In addition, people have no worry about how to find a parking lot when they are go shopping, due to the fact that Wal-Mart has bought vast land in Jackson County. Besides, the best service is that it is open twenty-four hours for seven days. People can get cold beverages for their movie time even at midnight. Undoubtedly, it is the soul of Wal-Mart, to supply people’s essential requirements.
Second, the biggest advantage of Wal-Mart is cheap price. Remember the advertisement slogan about Wal-Mart? “Always low prices” is a critical point and emphasized for reinforcing the impression of it to people. According to Hoenig (2004), Wal-Mart can save over 2,000 United States dollars for a family per year. It is an essential point for all middle-class workers. Because the commodity prices are rising year by year, people should learn how to save money in an efficient way. In addition, Wal-Mart always has discount sales for some goods to attract the consumers. As a result, people use less money to purchase the same commodities compared to other stores and has the same right of guarantees and warranties.
Finally, the existence of Wal-Mart can provide hundreds of jobs to people. Hoeing (2004) stated that “In 2005, Wal-Mart created 125,000 U.S. jobs, and is continuously adding thousands each month” (para. 28). Once Wal-Mart opens, it must hire people to support its running for the whole business. In this case, it is not only contributing to the welfare of residents, but also that of college students. Especially, there is Southern Illinois University of Carbondale in the area; therefore, students can get a part-time job to earn the tuition or cost of living.
Some people claimed that Wal-Mart just provides a little salary and health insurance for their employees. According to UFCWIU (2005), Wal-Mart’s employees’ annual wages was under the poverty line for a family of three in 2001. However, people have to think about the fact that War-Mart usually offers jobs to people who find it hard to get a job in America society, such as housewives, students and people who do not own an outstanding degree. In fact, most positions in War-Mart are cashiers that everyone can fit competently without any special skills. In other words, Wal-Mart alleviates the poverty problem in the United State and increases the tax revenue for federal governments.
In conclusion, it is unquestionable that Wal-Mart improves our life quality and deeply touches our need. These days, Wal-Mart has become a necessary part in our life. Considering all above these, building a Wal-Mart supercenter in Carbondale-Murphysboro area is beneficial for all the dwellers. Moreover, it is an unavoidable tendency for us to have economic inflation in the future. Shopping in Wal-Mart is a great solution that can save your money.

Travel in Japan
Fluency Exercise #5
I dreamed of traveling in different counties since I was a college student. This year, I joined a group that traveled to Bali, which is one of the islands that belong to Indonesia. I had a bad experience with the trip because the travel guide tried to sell something to us, and complained too much about their government. Since then, I decided that I do not want to join anymore guided tours.
Today, individual travel is a popular choice. People can book the flight tickets and reserve a hotel easily by the Internet. If I have a vacation, Japan is the best choice, especially for individual travel. One reason is that I can orient the direction easily because the public signs in Japan are usually written down in Chinese characters.
Another reason is that I don’t need to worry about the traffic problem because the transportation in Japan is very convenient. In Tokyo, the capital of Japan, the subway station connects each scenic spot and the train schedule is very frequent. I can spend the whole day taking the train to anywhere and without following the tour schedule.
Besides, I love the Orient culture. In the past, Japan has gone to mainland China to learn their music, customs, language and art. Japanese kept the most of the Chinese culture and made a different style gradually. Fortunately, they are trying to keep reserving the soul of the culture.
I believe that you cannot wait until the next vacation. Japan is a deserted option.

Before The Wedding
Fluency Exercise #4
In Taiwan, the style of the wedding has leaned towards the Occident traditional wedding form, but with some difference. For example, if one couple is getting married, it is very meaningful for two families to become one family. Before the wedding, the man and his parents will go to the woman’s house and ask her parents to allow their marriage. After getting their approval, they start to prepare their wedding.
There is one thing different from Occident, which is that our parents are involved with our marriage details. People have to discuss each wedding detail with our parents; most of the time, parents take charge of each trivial part. However, sometime, the couple might be broken because their parents have opposite opinions.
There is another thing different from Occident, which is that people usually spend a lot of money and time to take pictures for memories. Couples go to a wedding studio and wear the beautiful bridal veil to take more than 100 pieces pictures. In their wedding, the album will be put on the table in order to share with everyone.
One interesting custom is that people who join their wedding party should give the couple money to bless their marriage. On the one hand, everyone has the responsibility to share the cost of the wedding breakfast.
Compared to the Occident traditional wedding, I think the Orient wedding has a significant value for two families. Each tradition that we should follow leads the couple to prepare to be one.

The Future of the all Species
Summay Response- Practice
In Bhattacharya’s (2004) article, “Global warming threatens millions of species”, she claims that 25 per cent of the species, especially for land animals and planets, would be extinct by 2050, because of global warming. She quoted the study from Chris Thomas at the University of Leeds, UK, and colleagues that classified the climate change as mild, moderate and severe for all the species. She pointed out that the minimum climate change might drive all of the species to move into a warm area and try to adapt in the climate. It will lead the original habitats of some species to be invaded by alien species and exploited by human’s activities in order to get more land for living. According the article, Stuart Pimm, said that once the habitat has been destroyed, between 10 and 30 per cent of species would face being endangered. Moreover, some species that rely on plants to survive would be dying out.
Today, there are 1103 species that are still alive and most of them are only suitable in special areas, such as the Amazon, which has the biggest rainfall in the world. Although some species can adapt to the climate change, some species can only live in particular environments. It is hard to find the same conditions that provide the same factors to make them grow.
First, it is impossible for all of the species to move into a new place. For example, polar bears only can hunt in the freeze season. Once the Arctic loses its ice cover, they will be extinct. There are rare species that can migrate to a new environment that must be smaller than the old one. All of the clues show that the only way for these species is extinction.
Next, the climate change is related to human’s activities. In order to have the better life quality, people have used natural resources without limits, or have overproduced the greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, which heats up the whole planet. For example, illegal logging is the primary reason that causes the Amazon to lose its rainfall by about 40% in the recently years.
In conclusion, climate change leads to an unavoidable consequence such as decreasing habitats and species extinctions. In order to cut off the bad result for all the species, we should take some actions to stop the global warming that include cutting the emissions of greenhouse gas, which is the primary factor to heat up earth, finding new energy resources, such as solar energy or other nature capitals, and decreasing the discharge of carbon dioxide.

The increasing of polar bear
Summary Response #2
For a long-time, people have insisted that the climate change leads the melting of sea ice, then, threaten the amount of polar bears. However, some researchers have a different discovery about polar bears. Mitchell Taylor, who is a biologist who studied polar bears for the Nunavut government for 20 years, claims that amount of polar bears are increasing in recent years (Langan, 2007). He is against the idea that it is global warming, which is considered the biggest threat to polar bears. Nevertheless, Andrew Derocher, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, claimed that the increasing in the population of polar bears is not related to climate change, but to conservation and an increase in the harp seal population (Lamgan, 2007).
Undebatably, the alarm of global warming is apparent. The influence of the Arctic becoming ice-free not only leads to the sea level rise but damages the habitats of the polar bear (CNN.com, 2007). The polar bear is the biggest carnivore in the Arctic and usually to be a standard animal as the balance of the Arctic ecosystem because of their life-style. They rely on the ice floe moving to distant places and hunting the harp seal for food. In other words, the subsistence of this species is involved with the sea ice that is the mass part in the Arctic. Recently, people believe that global warming has changed the ecosystem in the Arctic; moreover, it has endangered most mammals that live in the polar region. However, there are opposite points of view about that: the amount of polar bears is not decreasing as people thought, but increasing. However, that not mean people should do noting to protect them. On the contrary, the reason for the numbers of polar bears climbing up is complicated, and people should concentrate on the issue and figure out the real causes.
One of the reasons is conservation. For a long-time, the illegal hunting activity has been a grave threat to the survival of polar bears. There was more than 40 polar bears had been killed by hunters annually. As a result, many countries such as Canada and Norway made laws to ban illegal hunting. Definitely, this was contributing to protecting wildlife. In Canada’ s eastern Arctic, one of 19 polar bear population grew to 2,100, up from 850 in the mid-1980s (Langan, 2007). That is clear that protecting polar bears from hunting can save them against extinction. Therefore, all the things we need to do include not only cutting the greenhouse gas down, but forbidding the killing of rare animals.
Another reason is migration. One Inuit hurter reported that there are more polar bears wandering in town and trying to get food from human settlements compared before (Langan, 2007). Polar bears normally rely on the ice moving to other places to hunt seal. However, the decreasing of ice makes the activity become difficult. Therefore, they have to move into the north part, which has more ice covered lands to get more prey. It seems polar bears are becoming adapted to the climate change; nevertheless, finally, the Arctic will lose its ice cover and polar bears will lose their hunt.
Some people claimed that because the amount of polar bears is increasing now, humans should not spend money in conservation, but spend in helping people getting the better life quality instead. However, the Arctic will lose its sea ice cover by 2030 (CNN.com, 2007). As a result, it is predictable that polar bear will disappear and no longer exist in the future. Besides, an ice-free Arctic also can accelerate global warming, because solar energy will be absorbed by seawater, and then heat up the whole ocean, then the Earth. The responsibility for humans is unavoidable. Since last century, people have enjoyed the convenience of technology; at the same time, we produce too much waste and pollution, which causes the Earth to be unable maintain a sustainable society, which means the Earth loses its self-repair ability.
On the whole, the efficient way to protect endangered mammals that depend on sea ice is conservation and reducing the production of greenhouse gases. Considering the above, although it is impossible to create a zero-pollution environment, people must takes some actions to slow down the destroyed behaviors, not only for us but for our children and all the species.

Action for The Earth
Summary Response #1
According to the author of “Polar bears on thin ice” (2007), US law has tried to protect polar bears from becoming extinct. Polar bears are the biggest carnivore in the north pole, and they are totally dependent on the sea ice to survive. However, their habitats are facing disappearing recently because of global warming. Kert Davies claimed that American have the responsibility to take actions to save polar bears. Moreover, he said that the thick multiyear ice has been shrinking 8 to 10 per cent per decade and the Arctic could have no ice in summer by 2040. Therefore, the alarm of the Artic and polar bear reminds us that all people should pay attention to the climate change. There is only one thing important, he said, we must start cutting greenhouse gas emission or the polar bear will be extinct in our lifetime. The greenhouse gas production could increase the Earth’s temperature and cause the climate change. He argued that carbon dioxide, one component of greenhouse gases, is now rising at more than 2 percent a year. Considering all of the above, he said we need action not only from governments and corporations, but also from all of us.
It is very clear that our lives are influenced by the climate change seriously. From the Arctic to the deserts, from polar bears to sea turtles, all the living or non-living creatures are threatened by global warming. In other words, human being is the criminal of climate change. Recently, for better life quality, people have continued seeking the improvement of technology and have been unconcerned about the environment. Eventually, it leads to the destruction. Generally speaking, the emission of greenhouse gas is the biggest reason for global warming. For protecting the Earth, we have a duty to cut it down.
First, finding renewable resources, instead of oil and coal which has been considered to be nonrenewable resources helps reduce the carbon dioxide production. That means that people should be using a new pollution-free energy in order to decrease the rising of the Earth’s temperature. Today, solar capital is an ideal and unlimited resource. Many scientists have started working to transmit the solar capital to be a useful energy and have great achievements. For example, the innovation of solar-energy-heated water boiler makes the use of solar energy more efficient. As a result, it is can be expected that there will be the more applications of green energies in the future.
Second, the responsibility of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases is not only for particular countries or leaderships but for all human beings. If people would like to do some trivial things without extra effort or motion, it could be very helpful for saving the energy, for example, turning the computer off when you are not in the office. The energy you save from computer can print more than 100,000 pieces of paper. It does not take too much time to do that, but it is very beneficial strategy to contribute to the Earth.
Finally, preventing the Amazon from destruction is a big issue related to global warming. The Amazon has the biggest rainfall in the world and contains 40% of plants of the Earth. Every day, plants carry out the photo-synthesise and transfer of the carbon dioxide into water and oxygen. That is the reason that Amazon be called as the Earth’s lung. However, since the last century, people have been logging the wood unlimitedly in order to earn money. The decreasing of the trees is reflection of the fact that no matter how much people are concerned about this problem, there always will be some unreachable places. Considering that, Internationals must do some things to prohibit the immoderate logging.
To sum up, polar bears cannot fight for their habitats, but humans can. Most importantly, evidence shows that none planet has been found like the Earth which is suitable for all the species in the world. Therefore, it is an unavoidable duty to take actions changing the situation and fight for our planet.

Fluency Exercise #3
A New Communication Way Among Youths
It is doubtless that today younger people are influenced by computers, and that computers have become one necessary part in their lives. Youths meet people and seek information through the Internet. Moreover, they love to share their lives and characters with their friend in a virtual world. According to all these reasons, youths develop a way to communicate easily and quickly, in secret, and hide the side from their parents or family.
The one reason is that teenagers have their own individuality and sometime their thinking is hard to accept by adults. Therefore, spending time with the same generation is the only way to seek the identification for adolescences. However, some people claim that young students are confused with the new language and correction. In my point of view, it is hard to define how serious the problem is.
Another reason is for saving time. The meaning of communication is letting people who talk with you understand what you want to express. For example, when some people chat with their friends on MSN which is communication software that connects people who are in different places by the Internet, they use “U” as “you” or “coz” as “because”. In the present day, time is money. Definitely, using specific and short words instead of long one is a very helpful tip for saving time to do other things or chatting more.
In conclusion, the new communication way is accompanied with the advancement of the Internet. People can find one private place they can focus on without disturbance. The new language may be one part of my life in the future.

Environment
Taiwan is my home country and I have spent almost my whole life in this island. When I was a young child, I remember it was very cold and rained a lot during the winter. Besides, we always called the rainy spell in early summer the plum rains.
However, it has changed forever and unexpectedly. People never need to wear heavy clothes in order to defend themselves from the cold. Moreover, the blooming of flower was out of order in that we have an early antheses. All of these symptoms showed us that global warming changed the weather.
Although most people do not think it is a serious problem, warmer weather can damage the agriculture and make farmers lack in their harvest then lose their jobs. All of these not only affect a particular group but all the humans.
In conclusion, people have to face this problem and find out solutions such as seeking new natural energy instead of oil that decreases the emission of carbon dioxide. Although I prefer the warm weather, I would like to see my country just like before.

Technology
The progresses of technology has changed our life style and improved our life quality. In my opinion, the using of computer is an important part in our daily lives. For example, the innovation of computers and the internet allows people to get new and useful information immediately. Today, students can grasp the content of textbook by the internet and need no papers.
In additional, from flight tickets to hotel reservations, from clothes to shoes, we can order anything we want by the internet. Moreover, people can make new friends who are from other counties in an easy way. Compared to the people who lived in the Middle Age, modern life is like a miracle from God.
However, there are some problems that accompany with the life improvement. For example, people are used to getting anything from the internet such as news, music and movies even relationships. The consequence of relying on the computers makes people rather spend their time with the computer than with families and friends. Moreover, it makes people separate from the real world. Although technology is an essential tool for all people, however, it is hard to say whether it is good for humans or not.
